Reading into this particular article could mean only one thing: that you’re looking to learn a little more about one of the most impressive films of the 1990s, “American History X”. You might be surprised to learn that many people seem to think that this movie was based on real events. The truth is, that this is not the case. While there might be a little bit of truth in the telling of any good work of fiction, this is not the retelling of any one series of events. The movie starts rolling by introducing you to Danny Vinyard, who is still in high school. After getting in some trouble over having written a history paper on a white supremacist, he is told to write a paper on his brother Derek. Derek is Danny’s older brother and he is, for all intents and purposes, the main character of the piece.

Shortly there later, you learn about Derek’s position in the community. He represents a very strong gang of white supremacists, and he is their fearless leader. This really takes root very early in Derek’s life, when he sees his father attempting to put out a fire to save lives, and he is gunned down by a black drug dealer right in front of Derek. A man takes Derek under his wing, and guides him in the knowledge and path of white supremacy. So Derek formed his gang, and they were all too eager to be under his leadership.

You also learn that right now Derek is in prison, serving a sentence for a rather violent crime on a couple of black kids that were trying to break into Derek’s car. He, pistol drawn, came out of the house and shot two of the three culprits. He killed one with the shots. The other is the victim of likely the most violent act ever portrayed on film, where he forced the other man to place his teeth on the curb and he stomps on the back of the man’s head.

Derek is forced to confront his hating ways in prison, when he realizes that he is the minority and there is no protection for him. He, through a lengthy series of circumstances, befriends a black man that he is on laundry duty with. Derek vows that he would do anything to take it all back and start over again far away from what he now represents. He learns that his younger brother is headed in the same direction, and he will not allow this to happen.

At the welcome home party of his release, Derek asks his girlfriend to go away with him and Danny, she leaves upset and refusing. Derek is also forced to confront Cameron, the man responsible for Derek’s former beliefs and tell him what he now knew to be the truth. The brothers leave and Danny is able to finish his paper, which is spoken as narration through the last bits of the film.

The story ends with Danny being shot to death by a black kid in the bathroom at school. Powerful acting from Edward Norton (Derek Vinyard) and Edward Furlong (Danny Vinyard) bring this story to the screen and give it the perfect acting that such an impressive movie requires. American History X might be hard to watch at times, but it is a grand reflection on how people could be so confident in what they believe to be right.

Hopefully, you’ve seen this movie by now. In fact, it’d be sort of strange if you hadn’t. But, if you haven’t, don’t you think it’s high time you do? If you have internet under that rock where you’re living, you’ve got no excuse not to watch this movie already.

Watch it again. The movie really does have a lot of depth and is one of the great American classic films of the last few decades. The Road Warrior, known as Mad Max 2 in Australia, is, simply put, one of the all time classics. The movie is well crafted and the story well told. There aren’t a lot of movies that work so well on so many levels, much less action films, which are typically used just to turn over a quick and easy profit at the box office. The movie is just, very, very strong on all possible levels. It’s exciting, fun and has some moments of great humor, drama and humanity.

You probably know everything about the movie, but it’s worth a recap nevertheless: After World War III, food, water and gasoline have all become scarce. The outback of Australia has become a wasteland, overrun by ruthless gangs of warlords and thugs. Mad Max is a former cop now just trying to stay alive and find enough gas and water to get from one day to the next, to keep himself, his dog, and his car alive.

Throughout the previous film, Max lost touch with his humanity, becoming just as cruel and ruthless as the villains he pursued. This time, he needs to take a chance at redemption and at getting in touch with his humanity once more by getting involved once more with society, or what’s left of it.

The movie is really just one big chase scene, only stopping here and there just long enough to give the audience a moment to catch their breath. While a lesser movie might have been made boring by all this action, in The Road Warrior, the action and the story are one and the same. Character and plot are both developed through action, not like the modern action flick where the fights and chases only get in the way of the story.

In the end the movie is really a statement on heroism, delving into Joseph Campbellian mythological structure and coming up with what many Australians consider to be “Star Wars Down Under”. It’s certainly one of the most successful films to ever come out of that country, and is still considered a national treasure of the Australian cinema all these decades later.

The movie is, really, a classic western in a new setting. It belongs on the same shelf as Stagecoach as one of the all time great examples of how the classic John Ford and Howard Hawks westerns developed their own stories.

The movie is loud, fast and aggressive, full of insane characters and crazy stunts (several stuntmen almost died, in fact). It may well be one of the greatest films ever made for storytelling and craftsmanship, and if not, it’s certainly one of the all time great action films, and certainly worth a watch whether or not you’re usually an action fan. It’s definitely one to see before you die, and if you haven’t seen it yet, you want to ASAP.
