It was the third try of the Spaniards on trying to establish a Capital City. The first one was Iximche and was founded in 1524 near the Mayan tribe Kaqchiquel until they rebelled. The ruins of it are still a touristic destination. So it was moved to Ciudad Vieja (1527), a mudslide that came from the Agua Volcano (therefore its name) and the whole city disappeared. A few brave stayed and it is still an alive town.

As I mentioned before in 1773 came the great earthquake destroyed most of the Capital and it was finally evacuated and moved to Guatemala City in 1776 completely. Again a small community stayed and reconstructed the city as much as they could. Exploring The Ruins In Antigua Guatemala

Magpark – I don’t know if you know this but I have been living in Guatemala for the last year and have been loving it. Since then imy husband and I have done as much as we can to get to know it which means a lot of fun family trips. But this time we didn’t want to go too far so I called some of my Guatemalan friends and for some advice and they had the perfect thing.

They suggested something I had never thought of before yet it was so obvious: A nice picnic in the afternoon in one of Antigua Guatemala’s ruins. It sounded like a great idea so I ended up inviting them to come with us too. Then there was the question, which ruins should we visit? That’s because there are around 6 or 7 and the photos i’ve seen are all beautiful. We ended up picking one called San Jeronimo located on one of Antigua’s corners.

This is how the day went: After a regular Sunday morning we had lunch and I packed up my picnic set and off we went. We got there like 10 minutes after because everything in Antigua is less than15 minutes away in car. We settled up in one of its beautiful gardens and explored the place. This is not a very big monument but it is beautiful. There are lots of gardens and in some places you can still see murals from when it was a school.

I had a great time just chilling under a tree’s shadow, enjoying the view of the gardens, eating some snacks and listening to birds that were passing by. On the other hand my son had a blast exploring and climbing everything he saw. Plus he had a little adventure partner with him that was just as excited to be there. This turned out to be a relaxing yet exciting family adventure not so far from home.

These ruins belong to what used to be a catholic school in the early 1700’s and in the late 1700’s it was turned into the Real Aduana. Years later it was destroyed by earthquakes and was never restored because the city movet to where the actual Guatemala City is located. It was until the late 1990’s when the council for the protection of this colonial city was created and started doing maintenance work to it. Oh, and I almost forgot I heard that this place is also rented for weddings and special events, how cool is that?

Romantic Day In Antigua Guatemala

Mag park – I love living in Antigua because in it you will find everything really close to you, restaurants, hotels, shops and bars. In this case my husband and I wanted to have a romantic day out, so first we went out for lunch at a really cute restaurant called Cafe Flor where they serve really good Thai food. Then we went for a prvate salsa class which turned out to be an extra fun adventure.

And at the end of the day we visited a luxurious hotel of Antigua called Mezon Panza Verde for a romantic dinner I had been planning for a long time. When we were making the reservation they suggested a dinner up in the roof of the hotel where they have a Cupula. This sounded great to me because it was just what I wanted: A super private and romantic evening out with my husband.

When we got there and before they took us to our table we had to do some waiting in the lobby which was not what I wanted but it was ok because it wasn’t too long and it gave me some chance to take more pictures. Then a member of their staff took us to where our table was. To get there we had to walk across the terrace of the hotel, sadly it was a bit cloudy but we still could see the outskirts of the beautiful Agua Volcano.

When we got there I couldn’t believe how absolutely beautiful it was! La Cupula is this beautiful tiny room where they had a beautifully decorated table with candles and roses.

This ended up being a perfect day out and romantic dinner where my husband and I got the chance to relax and just be together after a long time of not having time for ourselves.

Bottom line is: Antigua isn’t just a beautiful city with lots of places to visit and photograph, it is also a great place for romantic getaways and family vacations, I know because I’ve explored it.
